Graham Sutherland once said:

“I think it is bad for a painter to try to explain his work. He is using up energy which could be better employed in painting, or he is tempted to rationalise the intuitive workings of his mind” (“Thoughts on painting ”, 1951)

I understand what he means.

My work has been developing in a series of phases, in which different subjects have provided a main stimulus and focus. Although, in fact, they run into each other and overlap, it might help me make sense of my interests to arrange my pictures into several “Galleries”. Each is introduced by a brief comment. Taking notice of Sutherland's advice, I will not try to “explain” my work. My remarks will, I hope, at least help to point visitors in the right direction.
